Ireland’s Response to Haiti Earthquake – Graphs

Within weeks of the Haitian earthquake on 12 January 2010, the general public in Ireland had donated €21 million (source: Dóchas survey, March 2010) to organisations.
Our research since then (undertaken by Claire Hawkins and Quinn Ferguson, Trinity College Dublin, November 2010) has shown that Ireland donated a total of over €37 million to the Haiti relief effort, with the Government contributing €8.6 million (The amount provided by Irish Aid forms part of an overall €13 million pledge for the 2010-2012 period).
Irish NGOs responded quickly and effectively, and in the first 2-3 weeks developed a response to the many needs of the quake’s victims. This graph shows the number of Irish NGOs working in each thematic “cluster” during the first 2-3 weeks of the 2010 Haitian earthquake response. Emergency Shelter and NFIs (non-food items) were a priority in this phase.
Later on, as the relief effort stabilised, the priority shifted to Agriculture and Livelihoods, as well as Water & Sanitation, Shelter and “Non-Food Items”. (This chart shows the number of NGOs active in each sector)
Irish NGOs were working in different areas of the country:
| Organisation | Geographical Location |
| Christian Aid Ireland | Port-au-Prince, Southern Dominican Republic, Leogane, Les Nippes |
| Concern | Port-au-Prince, Saut D’eau, Ille de la Gonaive |
| Habitat for Humanity | Port-au-Prince, Leogane and Cabaret |
| Haven | Port-au-Prince, Croix de Bouquet, Delmas |
| Tearfund | Port-au-Prince, Leogane, Gressier, Jacmel, Carrefor |
| Trócaire | Port-au-Prince, Jeremie, Gressier, Leogane, Petit Goave, Jacmel,Cayes, Border of Dominican republic, Fonds Parisien, Jimani, Belladere, Elias Pina, Las Cahobas |
| MSF | Port-au-Prince, Jacmel, Leogane, Chatulet, Sarthe, Tabarre, Lycée des Jeunes Filles, Delmas, Shekina |
| Plan Ireland | South East Haiti, Croix des Bouquets |
| Oxfam: | Port-au-Prince |
| World Vision Ireland | Port-au-Prince, Central Plateau |
Irish NGOs raised over €28 million for the relief effort, with the biggest agencies raising the most money. Concern, Trócaire, Goal and the Irish Red Cross between them raised over €22 million.
(Note: This data is accurate as of November 2010, to the best knowledge of the MA student researchers who compiled the data for Dóchas. These figures, and those referred to for individual organisations within the chart, do not include Irish Aid funds made available to Irish NGOs for the Haiti response.)

[...] The funding received by Irish NGOs was used in the immediate aftermath to assist affected people with emergency shelter and non-food items (including such items as blankets, mosquito nets, kitchen sets, jerry cans, buckets, etc), water, sanitation and food aid. Also involved in that immediate stage were activities to support health services, food aid and emergency education. (see also these graphs) [...]

I think the first graph (showing the money spent by Irish Aid vs the irish public) is the most hearting development message I’ve seen in a long time. Irish people clearly still have a desire to help the world’s poorest, despite the economic challenges we are facing. When that public support exists, the Development sector has a duty to do us proud on the international stage.
